Happy New Year! I returned to LA yesterday after a wonderful winter break. Today we plunged straight into Block 3 (gastrointestinal, endocrine, and reproductive physiology). Next Wednesday, fourteen of my classmates and I will be starting a two-week Lipids Exercise, designed to demonstrate the effects of diet on lipid levels, as indicated by pre- and post- blood tests. All meals will be provided by and no other food will be allowed, so I might blog the provided meals a little (in jest). The biggest challenge for me will be the lack of real dessert or chocolate for two whole weeks, but afterwards Karthik (who is also in the Exercise) and I intend to make up for this deprivation British-style, hopefully via afternoon tea at the Peninsula Beverly Hills.
But for now, there are some non-controlled meals to be described. On December 22, the day before I left for Shanghai, I met Anna for lunch at Thai Canteen. Neither of us had been, though Anna's sister Amanda had found it reasonably good. We decided to share the pad thai and a duck curry special. For noodles, one has the protein options of tofu, chicken, beef, pork, shrimp or calamari, and we chose calamari. The pad thai was definitely on the sweet side and I wouldn't have wanted a full portion, but the calamari was tasty, and sharing worked out well. Also, portions are quite generous to begin with.
The duck curry was very flavorful and included some cherry tomatoes, pineapple, Thai basil, and some coconut milk if I remember correctly.
Prices were on par with the other Davis Thai restaurants, and it was really nice to catch up with Anna!
